Campbell's Point

 history of the point

As Told By Newspaper Articles of the DAy

This is the oldest newspaper article that I could locate (to date) discussing Campbells Point . It was found in the Cape Vincent Gazette first published on August 14 1858. Please note : Archibald Campbell purchases what today is known as Campbells Point on August 25, 1853 from one George Hounsfield of Sheffield England. What the property was called before that time I am still hoping to find out. This article below comes five years after Archibald Campbell purchased the property.

This article found in the New York Reformer on September 2, 1858  are the race results and prizes for the race announced above. It is difficult to read so I have transcribed :

We hear that quite a spirited trial of speed between small sail boars , occurred in Henderson Bay on Friday the 20th let. To enliven the occasion , a purse of $30 was divided into five prizes; the first $10, the second $8 and $2 each for each succeeding prize. Eleven boats their names , time in sailing, owners names and place of residence are as follows;

Whistler ( cannot read times ) Howard Chaumont, P---- Reed Reed Pillar Point, Reindeer Her___Pillar Point , Flora Them----Crapo Pillar Point , Wings of wind Ackerman Pillar Point ,Belle Wescott Henderson, Which - Ware (?)R Ha-- Henderson, Lone Star Unreadable Henderson, May Flower unreadable Henderson , Northerner unreadable Henderson , White Cloud Warner and Bassett Henderson.

The boats started from Campbells Point, running up to the bay near it center and turning at a flag boat; then around Gull Island back to the starting point, forming nearly a triangle in the route.There being a fresh breeze from the southwest, they had a fair trial in every respect;"by the wind" "off the wind" and "over the quarter" . The White Cloud as compared with the Belle gained 3 1/2 minutes while sailing on the wind before reaching the flag boat ; in returning she lost three minutes consequence of The Belle using more canvas " off the wind" and took first prize by only half a minute. The Belle is a fine sailer , receiving the second prize, Lone Star 3rd;Reindeer 4th and Whistler 5th. There was but one smaller craft item the White Cloud entered,(unreadable0 being 1 to 2 feet longer keel and more breadth of beam the rules restricting length to (unreadable). All made excellent times they run about 4 miles head wind- making the distance sailed about 18 miles. Some 500 persons were present. Dinner was served in the graven good style and everything passed off pleasantly.
